SurgiVision ClearPoint Gets FDA Clearance for Neurological Interventions


SurgiVision has received FDA clearance for its ClearPoint system for MR guided neurological interventional procedures. It allows for precise targeting of lesions within the brain. The system consists of a disposable, MRI-compatible head-mounted adjustable trajectory frame; a multi-channel imaging head coil with integrated head fixation frame; a workstation and an MRI compatible computer and monitor with navigational software; and lastly, a complete MRI compatible surgical kit. The system can be used in existing MRI suites.

10 Foods that raise your metabolism

Here are foods that will increase your metabolism and help you lose weight.

1. Water! Researchers in Germany found that subjects of astudy increased their metabolic rates (the rate at which calories are burned) by 30 percent after drinking approximately 17 ounces of water. Water is also a natural appetite suppressant that banishes bloat as it flushes out sodium and toxins.

2. Green Tea! Studies show that green tea extract boosts metabolism and may aid in weight loss. This mood-enhancing tea has also been reported to contain anti-cancer properties and help prevent heart disease.

3. Soup! Eat less and burn fat faster by having a bowl of soup as an appetizer or a snack. According to a Penn State University study, soup is a super appetite suppressant because its made up of a hunger-satisfying combination of liquids and solids. In the study, women chose one of three 270-calorie snacks before lunch. Women who had chicken and rice soup as a snack consumed an average of 100 fewer calories than those in the study who opted for a chicken and rice casserole or the casserole and a glass of water.

4. Grapefruit! Researchers at Scripps Clinic found that participants who ate half a grapefruit with each meal in a 12-week period lost an average of 3.6 pounds. The study indicates that the unique chemical properties in this vitamin C-packed citrus fruit reduce insulin levels, which promotes weight loss. NOTE: If you are taking medication, check with your doctor about any potentially adverse interactions with grapefruit.

5. Apples and Pears! Overweight women who ate the equivalent of three small apples or pears a day lost more weight on a low-calorie diet than women who didnt add fruit to their diet, according to researchers from the State University of Rio de Janeiro. Fruit eaters also ate fewer calories overall.

6. Broccoli! Study after study links calcium and weight loss. Broccoli is not only high in calcium, but also loaded with vitamin C, which boosts calcium absorption. This member of the nutritious cabbage family also has plenty of vitamin A, folate and fiber. And, at just 20-calories per cup, this weight-loss superfood not only fights fat but also contains powerful phytochemicals that boost your immunity and protect against disease.

7. Low-Fat Yogurt! Dairy products can boost weight loss efforts, according to a study in the April issue of Obesity Research. People on a reduced-calorie diet who included three to four servings of dairy foods lost significantly more weight than those who ate a low-dairy diet containing the same number of calories. Low-fat yogurt is a rich source of weight-loss-friendly calcium, providing about 450 mg (about half the recommended daily allowance for women ages 19-50) per 8-ounce serving, as well as 12 grams of protein.

8. Lean Turkey! Countless studies have shown that protein can help boost metabolism, lose fat and build lean muscle tissue so you burn more calories. A 3-ounce serving of boneless, skinless lean turkey breast weighs in at 120 calories and provides 26 grams of appetite-curbing protein, 1 gram of fat and 0 grams of saturated fat.

9. Oatmeal! This heart-healthy favorite ranks high on the good carb list, because its a good source of cholesterol-fighting, fat-soluble fiber (7 grams per 3/4-cup serving) that keeps you full and provides you with the energy you need to make the most of your workouts. Just be sure to choose steel cut or rolled oats, not instant oatmeal, to get your full dose of vitamins, minerals and fiber.

10. Hot Peppers! Eating hot peppers can speed up your metabolism and cool your cravings, researchers at Laval University in Canada found. Heres why: Capsaicin (a chemical found in jalapeno and cayenne peppers) temporarily stimulates your body to release more stress hormones, which speeds up your metabolism and causes you to burn more calories.

The Ultimate Telemedicine Tweak to dSLRs: Cancer Detection


Photography-loving doctors now have more reasons to love their digital cameras. MacGyvers at Rice University and MD Anderson Cancer Center have cleverly engineered your everyday dSLR into a portable, high-resolution fiber-optic fluorescence imaging system that can detect cancer in-vivo.


In this month’s PLoS ONE, they showed off the prowess of their camera system retrofitted with a LED light, an objective lens, a fiber-optic bundle in capturing sub-cellular images non-invasively and in real-time. In field tests of a fluorescence-labeled oral cancer cell culture, a surgically-resected human tissue specimen with dysplastic and cancerous regions, and a healthy human subject in vivo, the fiber-optic microscope resolved individual nuclei in all specimens and tissues imaged to distinguish qualitatively and quantitatively between normal, precancerous and/or cancerous tissues.


Portable and inexpensive at $2000 all-together, the clever device may be a useful tool to assist in the identification of early neoplastic changes in epithelial tissues in spartan clinical settings where MacGyver himself may have been.

Say “I do” to a healthful life together — 3 tips to avoid post-nuptial pounds

Recently I blogged about how easy it is to fall off your diet plan when your diet partner has as little willpower as you do. Since my diet partner is also my husband, I wasnt surprised to read that people in stable relationships are more likely to be obese than non-couples. In fact, being married triples your risk of being overweight.

When we were planning our wedding, the last thing on my mind was the post-nuptial pounds we were going to put on. I was more concerned with whatfood we were going to serve at our reception, not a lifetime of healthful or not so healthful meals.

Weight loss and obesity expert Dr. David Edelson offers these tips for avoiding post-nuptial pounds:

  • Have an Anti-Love Chub plan: While planning your future together, dont leave your health and diet out of the discussions. Look at weight-impacting factors such as different eating habits, setting aside time for fitness, medications and managing sleep disturbances. Itll be a lot easier to address these issues before you start gaining weight.

  • It’s nice to share: Marriage often brings with it social obligations, which means dining out more frequently. If you’re at a restaurant that serves monster sized portions, ask if you can have one entree split between two plates.

  • Take a walk together: Walking is still one of the most under-rated exercises for preventing weight gain. It’s also a great way to enjoy some alone time with the one you love. Make it part of your daily routine and don’t allow anything to interfere! You’ll not only stay fitter, you’ll keep those marital lines of communication flowing.

Detecting Depression in Blogs and Online Texts

rf31bz91.jpgIn a Thought Police kind of way, a new computer program can detect depression through your online writing. Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, in Beer-Sheva, Israel, have developed a program that detects depression in text without obvious terms like “depression” or “suicide”. In a sample of 200 positively identified texts out of 300,000 which were screened by the program, there was a 78 percent agreement between the program and a panel of psychologists. The researchers foresee the program being used to proactively screen people for depression after which a psychologist can make a definitive diagnosis. They even suggest pop-up warnings for comments which contain a depressive pattern. However, so far no efforts have been made to actually correlate the program’s judgment with the mental state of the writers. The findings will be presented later this year at the 2010 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence and Intelligent Agency Technology.
